Hawaii County has closed several beach parks as high surf batters north- and east-facing shores.

Waves between 15 and 30 feet tall were forecast.

A high surf warning is in effect until 6 p.m., though it might be downgraded to an advisory.

Closed parks include Richardson Ocean Park, Leleiwi Beach Park, Carlsmith Park, James Kealoha Park, Onekahakaha Park and Coconut Island.

Kalanianaole Avenue between Kioea and Kolea streets in Hilo also is closed. A detour is available on Nene Street.
